Formed by Pierre-Joseph Celestin Baume and Louis Victor Baume in the Jura Mountains of Switzerland around 1830 and originally called ‘Baume Brothers’. They made pocket watches.
The company remained a family-run company as Baume & Co until 1920 when watchmaker William Baume, grandson of the founder, formed an alliance with jeweller Paul Mercier. It set the tone of the watches, combining the quality and accuracy of watch making into an item of rare beauty.
In 1975 the Piaget family bought control of Baume & Mercier. In 1992 the Cartier Group became sole owners of Piaget and Baume & Mercier.
Baume et Mercier makes around 200,000 timepieces per year.
