During the first world war, soldiers crawling in the trenches found wristwatches were far more suitable than a watch in a vest pocket. With watch manufacturers increasingly able to miniaturize yet improve accuracy, wristwatches became more and more fashionable and by 1950 the pocket watch had had its day. Today, a good pocket watch is much sought after by collectors.
